Concorde CC vs Pyestock CC
Date: Sunday 5th May 2019
Weather: Cloudy but dry.
Toss: Won by Pyestock CC who elected to field.
Result: Concorde CC won by 34 runs
Team: C. Heath (C), J. Ford, T. Threlfall (w), J. Bromley, D. Heath, C. Eve, P. Bright, J. Threlfall, S. Armes, P. Harris, J. Baldwin.
How did thing start?
Both sides were reasonably content with their start to the match. Dan Heath and Sam Armes kept things very tight to begin with, whilst Cadian and Fernandez looked in little trouble as they produced 60 runs for the opening partnership. It was change bowler Jay Threlfall who made the breakthrough in the 19th over as Fernandez skewed a drive high to point, where Armes took a good catch.
This brought Weston to the crease and Pyestock continued to toil on a slow pitch offering little in terms of pace and sideways movement. Concorde accumulated well with Cadian passing 50 before being Bowled by Jack Bromley, Dan Heath returned for a second spell and took 2 further wickets, but Weston remained and played an impressive and fluent innings to bring up his century in the 48th over, which also signalled the declaration with the hosts on 228 for 4.
So the important bit, how was tea?
Concorde never disappoint with a large selection of cakes to compliment a variety of sandwiches and tea/coffee in proper English cups. Many thanks to those who put this all together!
So, the reply?
Jon Ford was placed on suicide watch after making a meal of a long-hop from Wells in the second over, but Tom Threlfall, Paul Bright and Jack Bromley more than steadied the ship and set Pyestock on course for an epic chase.
Victory in sight then?
Very much so, a fantastic maiden half century from Threlfall was very much deserved and the supporting roles of Bright and Bromley who added 28 apiece saw Pyestock reach 160 for 3 with 12 overs to score the remaining 69 runs. Concorde were also struggling with the mundane pitch and at this stage looked beaten.
A first victory of the season then?
Should have been, but with 3 wickets falling without a run being scored, panic started to set in, Dan Heath was moved up the order to try and keep the run rate flowing but he fell on his sword with 4 overs remaining with Pyestock 190 for 9. Chris Heath and Jake Baldwin pulled down the shutters for a draw, but with just 12 balls remaining Heath inexplicably overstretched and left his ground leaving Freeman an easy stumping and gifting Concorde a 34 run victory.
But a good game nonetheless?
As always, very very enjoyable, and close games are the reason we take to the field each week. Our thanks once again to Concorde for another successful fixture and we wish them the best for the rest of the season.
